Astro News June 2025
- 21 May 2025
June brings crisp winter skies and exciting sights for stargazers in Namibia. Venus shines brightly in the early morning hours, while Mars glows red in the evening twilight. Mercury peeks out low in the west after sunset, and Saturn rises early before dawn. The June solstice on the 21st marks the shortest day of the year, an astronomical milestone once used by Eratosthenes to calculate Earth’s size over 2,000 years ago. Under moonless skies later this month, look out for the Butterfly and Ptolemy clusters (M6 & M7) in Scorpius, best seen with binoculars from a dark location. With a New Moon on the 25th, it’s the perfect time to enjoy deep-sky treasures in the southern Milky Way.
