Astro News May 2025

  • 29 April 2025

This May, early risers can catch Mercury and Saturn in the dawn sky, with Mercury visible until sunrise and Saturn rising around 03:15. Venus continues to brighten as it approaches its peak on 24 May, reaching a dazzling magnitude of -4.3. Mars is slowly fading into the evening twilight, setting just before midnight, while Jupiter and Saturn begin reappearing from behind the Sun after their solar conjunctions.

The η-Aquariid meteor shower peaks around 6 May and will remain active until the 28th, best seen from 02:30 until dawn. Don’t miss the close approach of the Moon and Venus on 23 May – a striking sight in the early morning sky.

Our Constellation of the Month is Coma Berenices – rich in mythology and home to spectacular deep-sky objects such as the Black Eye Galaxy (M64) and Messier 100, both visible with amateur telescopes. Named after Queen Berenice II’s legendary hair, this small northern constellation also marks the North Galactic Pole and is a treasure trove for galaxy lovers.
