What is ARISS?

The Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) program is a joint initiative of the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS), the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), and the Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation (AMSAT). ARISS enables students worldwide to engage directly with astronauts, sparking interest in STEM fields while learning about space technologies, radio science, and satellite communications.

ARISS program goals are:

  • Inspiring young people to pursue STEM education and careers.
  • Providing educational opportunities in wireless technology and radio science.
  • Promoting understanding of space exploration and satellite communications.

What is Amateur Radio?

Amateur, or “Ham,” Radio is a global hobby and public service in which licensed participants operate communications equipment to talk locally, internationally, and even into space — without the need for cellular networks or the internet. Amateur radio plays an important role during natural disasters when traditional communications fail, and it fosters experimentation, innovation, and community service.
