Namibia’s Iconic Carnivores: Cheetah Ecology, Innovative Field Monitoring, and Future Conservation Challenges

Many of Namibia’s terrestrial and iconic carnivores species are increasingly under pressure.

This presentation will take a closer look at Namibia’s carnivore community, exploring its composition and conservation status.

Particular attention will be given to the cheetah, examining its ecology, the challenges of monitoring this naturally sparse and wide-ranging species, Namibia’s pivotal role as a stronghold for the species, and recent population trends.

About the speaker: Dr Tim Hofmann is a conservation scientist specializing in non-invasive wildlife monitoring and human–wildlife conflict mitigation. He has extensive field experience across Africa, with a particular focus on carnivore conservation in Namibia and Angola. Since 2018, he has led the Scat Detection Dog Programme at the Cheetah Conservation Fund. Hofmann holds a PhD in Wildlife Sciences from the University of Göttingen, Germany.
