Gordon McGregor
Gordon McGregor was born on 13 March 1948 in Benoni, Gauteng (formerly Transvaal), South Africa and where he grew up and went to school. After completing his military service in the former South West Africa, he left for Germany, where he resided for a year. Upon return, he decided to live in South West Africa. He initially received training as a communications technician, and thereafter completed his training as an electrician. He retired in September 2010 from the position of Physical Planner of the University of Namibia and now hopes to have more time for research and publications.
His interest in German Imperial colonial troops started at an early age and was fuelled by his arrival in South West Africa. It triggered an interest in collecting and researching medals, badges, insignia and the history from that period. He is a founder member, past president and lifelong honorary member of the ‘Militaria Collector’s Society of Namibia’, as well a member of the ‘Namibia Scientific Society’, the ‘Deutsche Gesellschaft für Ordenskunde e. V.’, the ‘Orders and Medals Society of America’ and the ‘South African Military Medal Collector’s Society’. He has published many books and articles in magazines on the medals, badges, insignia and history of the country in various languages from the pre-colonial times to the present day and has also received many accolades as well as national and international honours and awards for his work in these fields.
Gordon McGregor wurde am 13. März 1948 in Benoni, Gauteng (früher Transvaal), Südafrika, geboren, wo er aufwuchs und zur Schule ging. Nachdem er seinen Militärdienst im früheren Südwestafrika geleistet hatte, ging er für ein Jahr nach Deutschland. Nach seiner Rückkehr beschloss er, sich in Südwestafrika niederzulassen. Zunächst erhielt er eine Ausbildung als Fernmeldetechniker und vollendete dann die Ausbildung zum Elektriker. Im September 2010 beendete er sein Arbeitsverhältnis als Planer bei der Universität von Namibia und ging in Rente. Er hofft, dass er jetzt mehr Zeit zum Forschen und Schreiben hat.
Sein Interesse an der Geschichte der Schutztruppe begann schon früh und setzte sich bei seiner Ankunft in Namibia fort. Es reizte ihn, Medaillen, Abzeichen und Insignien aus dieser Zeit zu sammeln. Er ist Gründer, war der erste Präsident und ist lebenslanges Ehrenmitglied der „Militaria Collector’s Society of Namibia“, wie auch Mitglied der „Namibia Wissenschaftlichen Gesellschaft“, der „Deutsche Gesellschaft für Ordenskunde e. V.“, der „South African Military Medal Collector’s Society“ und der „Orders and Medals Society of America“. Er hat verschiedene Bücher in unterschiedlichen Sprachen, veröffentlicht und ausführlich über Medaillen, Abzeichen und Insignien des Landes aus der vorkolonialen Zeit bis in die Gegenwart geschrieben. Er ist für seine Tätigkeiten auf diesem Gebiet vielfach geehrt und anerkannt worden.

This book places on record the awarding of medals by the German Military Authorities to members of the Native population in the former colony of German South West Africa.
These members of the Native population were in the military service in the Colonial Troops and fought integrally with the Colonial Troops during the various campaigns within the colony.
The book is not a work on the history of or the politics of their service in the former colony but deals rather specifically with the medal awarded to these members of the Native population as from 1892 to 1918 when the country ceased to be a German colony.

During the Civil War in America (1861-1865), the Confederate Ship ‘CSS Alabama’ used the lagoon Angra Pequeña, today known as Luderitz, as a base. The frigate ‘USS Vanderbilt’ of the northern states discovered her there and a battle ensued between the two of them. After the ‘USS Vanderbilt’ captured the ship ‘Saxon’, lying at anchor in Radford Bay, the ‘Saxon’s’ First Officer Griffith left the ship and stayed with David Radford at his house at Radford Bay. Griffith was then shot for mutiny by the First Officer of the ‘USS Vanderbilt’ and buried by his friend Radford in the bay now called Griffith Bay.
Was it really Griffith who was shot or was it someone else? Are Griffith and Grey the same person? The book also explains a relatively unknown link between South West Africa and the American Civil War.
