Orde Levinson

Namibian born and bred orde left the country to study and work in Europe. He is now an Oxford-based art historian, artist, and published author of more than seventeen books including poetry, plays, critical analyses, and artist compendia. He is considered to be one of the leading authorities on John Piper and John Muafangejo (author of the catalogue raisonné on both their prints), as well as a recognised expert on the History of Cubism.
As an artist, his collection of poetry Ndilapa Nkosi was praised by Samuel Beckett as ‘a moving feat’ and his play, Forcible Love, based on the life of John Muafangejo premiered in the National Theatre of Namibia to co-incide with Namibia’s Independence Celebrations and sold out its run.
He has directed a successful Oxford based production of The Merchant of Venice, lectured in many countries on the work, and is finishing off his The Rialto Dialogues, a re-evaluation of The Merchant of Venice redefining Shylock as a hero and Portia as Portiago.
His most recent book out in 2018 is a 10 Volume, 3600 page collection of the complete collection of Piper’s writings and he has begun re-editing his work on the complete writings of Daniel Henry Kahnweiler for publication as well as working on a number of poems including The Marsh Land. He hopes to spend more time in Namibia in the future.

In Namibia geboren und aufgewachsen, verließ Orde Levinson sein Heimatland, um in Europa zu studieren und zu arbeiten, und lebt heute in Oxford. Er ist Kunsthistoriker, Künstler und Autor von mehr als siebzehn Büchern mit Gedichten, Theaterstücken, kritischen Analysen und Künstlerkompendien. Er gilt als einer der führenden Experten über John Piper und John Muafangejo und ist Autor der Werkverzeichnisse der Drucke dieser beiden Künstler. Orde ist außerdem Fachmann für die Geschichte des Kubismus.
Samuel Beckett lobte Ordes Gedichtsammlung Ndilapa Nkosi als „bewegende Leistung“. Sein auf dem Leben John Muafangejos basierendes Theaterstück Forcible Love war während der Laufzeit im Nationaltheater von Namibia, die mit den Feierlichkeiten zu Namibias Unabhängigkeit zusammenfiel, ausverkauft.
Er inszenierte eine erfolgreiche Produktion des Kaufmann von Venedig in Oxford und hielt in vielen Ländern Vorträge über das Werk. Er arbeitet zurzeit an der Fertigstellung der Rialto-Dialoge, eine Neubewertung des Kaufmann von Venedig, die Shylock als Held und Portia als Portiago neu definieren.
Ordes zuletzt veröffentlichtes Buch (2018) ist eine 3600-seitige Sammlung über 10 Bände der gesammelten Schriften Pipers. Er hat mit der Überarbeitung der gesammelten Schriften Daniel Henry Kahnweilers für die Veröffentlichung begonnen. Außerdem arbeitet er an einer Reihe von Gedichten, u. a. The Marsh Land. Er hofft, in Zukunft mehr Zeit in Namibia verbringen zu können.

John Ndevasia Muafangejo (1943–1987), Namibia’s most acclaimed artist alongside Adolph Jentsch and Fritz Krampe, gained worldwide recognition during his short and intensely productive career for the power, uniqueness and immediacy of his vision.
